In my comparative literature class we read a book called, 'The Lazarillo' and in this book the main character, Lazarillo is driven throughout the entire story by hunger. And later in the story you meet a character, a nobleman who is entirely driven by honor. Both characters are driven both so much by these two things – hunger and honor – that they would give up anything and everything for them.
This seems random, but it drew me to Philippians and to Paul.
“But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost everything.”
Nothing is greater than knowing Christ! Paul says this and I think we all know this – yet we are all selfish, prideful and worldly people who cannot comprehend how wonderful Christ truly is and how honored we should be to know Him.
“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and then fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death and so, somehow, to attain the resurrection from the dead."
“Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” - I really enjoyed this verse. Gentleness is a character trait I find so very important and something I want others to see in myself. And rejoicing and being joyful in the Lord is also a very wonderful attribute. :-)
“For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty of in want. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength."
Paul would give up anything for Christ. Like Lazarillo would for food and the nobleman would for honor. What is it that I would give up anything for when it truly comes down to it? Would I give up anything and everything for Christ? AND be content?! Even if I would give up everything, I sure as heck wouldn't be content! I think I'd either complain my behind off or brag about it – which wouldn't actually be giving it up for Christ. I wish I knew the secret that Paul knows to being content in any and every situation – must come from Christ, that's for sure.
Oh Lord, how great you are and how great is the work needed in me!
